In Hinduism, Gangotri is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and holds great significance as the birthplace of the holy river Ganga (Ganges). The primary source of the river is the Gaumukh glacier, located 19 kilometers away from the Gangotri temple. Built in the 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa, the temple is situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River, surrounded by deodar and pine trees. A short walk from the temple leads to Bhagirath Shila, the holy rock where King Bhagirath worshipped Lord Shiva. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, and it is believed that the water from Gangotri is brought to soothe Lord Shiva’s throat after consuming poison.
